GEC-NYC April 2018 meeting took place on 30 April and was hosted by AFS-USA. Every other month the coalition meetings are dedicated to Professional Development opportunities and coalition members were pleased to welcome a special guest of AFS Intercultural Programs, Mr. Mario Piacentini of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for the April Professional Development Meeting.
Mr. Piacentini is a lead analyst and part of the international expert team that created the recently launched global competence framework and assessment strategy for the triennial OECD – Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test, which measures the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students worldwide.
Mr. Piacentini’s presentation during the meeting was also broadcasted as a webinar allowing for educators, students, NGOs and friends of GEC-NYC around the world to tune-in for the presentation and join the Q&A session that followed. Attendees at the meeting and those joining online got a chance to learn about the development process of the new global competency framework, the challenges faced so far, how NGOs and teachers can prepare for the upcoming assessment. You can find out more about PISA and the new framework here.
A tribute to Dr. Tonya Muro, a founding member of the GEC-NYC, Executive Director of iEarn-USA and a former staff member at AFS-USA and Global Nomads group who passed away suddenly on March 5, 2018, was held at AFS USA following the meeting. Many warm, wonderful, and often very humorous memories about Tonya were shared by several attendees alongside mentions of her countless and tremendous contributions to global education.
